Harding Abner C. Monmouth City deceased, whose portrait appears in this work, was born at East Hampton, Conn., Feb. 10, 1807; received an academical education; studied law; removed to Monmouth, Warren Co., Ill., June, 1838, where he engaged in the practice of his profession, in exmanagement; was a member of the Constitutional Convention of Illinois in 1848; was a member of the State Legislature of Illinois in 1848, 1849, 1850; enlisted as private in the 83d Reg. Of I.V.I., and was commissioned as Conlonel; was promoted to Brigadier-General for his gallant and brave defense of "Fort Donelson," Feb. 3, 1864, where, with a force of only 800 men, he held at bay a force of over 8,000 men and 13 pieces of artillery, under Gens. Wheeler, Foster and Warton, and after six hours' fighting compelled tham to withdraw, thus leaving reinforcement and supplies which were coming up the river for Gen. Rosecrans, free to reach their destiination. The dead, wounded and prisoners of the rebels exceeded the entire command of Col. Harding; he lost about 100 men. Gen Harding was elected to the Thirty-ninth Congress, and re-elcted to the Fortieth Congress; married Susan A. Ickes, from Perry Co., Penn., June 30, 1835; had two children by former marriage, Geo. F. and Mary R.; Mr. H. died July 19, 1874, aged 67 years. _ _ _
